Remote access to TUM Physics Department CIP pool
Remote access allows you to access the Ubuntu workstations in the CIP pool from home or anywhere else like you were sitting in front of them. Your computer does not need to be running Linux, you can use any popular operating system. If you rather like a command line remote connection, you can connect via SSH.
The Physics Department also provides remote access to a Microsoft Windows terminal server.
Why remote access can be useful to you
Using our remote access service provides you with several benefits,
- you get free access to some expensive applications (Mathematica, Maple, MATLAB),
- you can use a fully configured and working LaTeX system with several frontends (Kile, LyX),
- you can store all your university related files in a central place, where they are automatically backuped every night,
- you can access a fully working development environment for several programming languages (C, C++, Fortran, Java, Python, LISP) together with the powerful Eclipse IDE without installing it on your own computer,
- you may run CPU intensive programs (e.g. simulations) on our powerful workstations.
Requirements
You need a CIP user account. See our introduction for new users if you do not have a CIP user account yet.
Before you can use our remote access server you have to install the NoMachine NX Client which is available for several platforms:
Remote session types
There are two types of remote sessions.
- The remote full desktop session shows the desktop of a CIP workstation in a window on your computer like you were sitting in front of it. This includes the desktop, panels, taskbar, etc. At the moment it is the recommended and most robust solution to remotely access the CIP pool.
- The remote application session just shows the window of the application you want to work with on your local desktop. This is especially useful if you work primaryly on your own computer but want to use an application that is installed on the CIP pool.
One click application start

If you use our service often you might find it useful to create shortcuts on your desktop to avoid starting your web browser and opening this page. If you wish to start CIP remote sessions from your computer with only a single mouse click, download this archive containing shortcuts to CIP applications and extract it to your desktop. |
Keyboard shortcuts
The following keyboard shortcuts might be useful:
-
Ctrl + Alt + F to switch to fullscreen/windowed (not on MS Windows)
-
Ctrl + Alt + K to enable/disable the catching of Alt+Tab and Print Screen keys
A comprehensive list is available in this NX support article.
